Chapter 3

By My Life Story Editorial · Published · Updated

There are moments when fear makes the world feel faster.

This wasn’t one of them.

Everything slowed down.

Daniel’s footsteps.

Emily’s breathing.

The hum of the refrigerator in the kitchen.

My own heartbeat.

“Where’s Claire?” he called again.

Richard answered from somewhere near the foyer.

“What are you talking about?”

“Her location stopped updating twenty minutes ago.”

I stared at my phone.

Emily whispered, “He tracks you?”

I had forgotten.

Months earlier, Daniel and I had enabled location sharing after I got stranded with a flat tire on the Massachusetts Turnpike.

I had never turned it off.

My stomach dropped.

“He saw me come back.”

Emily’s eyes widened.

Daniel’s footsteps approached.

I grabbed her hand.

“Is there another exit?”

“The pantry.”

We slipped through the laundry room into a service corridor.

Voices carried from the kitchen.

Victoria sounded angry.

“Why would she come back here?”

Daniel answered.

“Because Emily talked to her.”

“How?”

“I don’t know.”

Richard said something too quiet to hear.

Then Daniel’s voice sharpened.

“Find them.”

We moved faster.

The pantry opened into a mudroom.

Beyond it was a side door.

I touched the handle.

Locked.

Emily whispered, “Deadbolt.”

“Key?”

“Kitchen.”

No time.

I pulled my phone from my bag.

Maya had sent six messages.

CHECK IN.

CLAIRE?

I’m calling you.

ANSWER.

I typed one thing.

RED FOLDER.

Send.

Daniel’s voice came from the hallway.

“Claire.”

Emily stopped breathing.

He knew.

“Claire, I know you’re here.”

His tone was calm.

Almost gentle.

The same voice he used when I woke from nightmares.

The same voice he used when he said he loved me.

“Come out.”

I opened the camera on my backup phone and started recording.

Then I stepped into the kitchen.

Emily stayed behind me.

Daniel stood beside the island.

Richard was near the doorway.

Victoria behind him.

Daniel looked at me.

His face changed.

Not anger.

Disappointment.

Like I had embarrassed him.

“What are you doing?”

“I could ask you the same thing.”

His eyes moved toward Emily.

“Come here.”

She flinched.

I stepped between them.

“She stays where she is.”

“Claire.”

“Don’t.”

He stared at me.

“You broke into my parents’ house.”

“Emily invited me.”

“She is not well.”

“She’s terrified of you.”

“That’s because she’s having another episode.”

Behind him, Victoria spoke.

“Claire, please. You don’t understand what we’ve dealt with.”

I looked at her.

“I understand the bruises.”

Victoria’s lips tightened.

Richard finally spoke.

“You should leave.”

“I intend to.”

“With Emily.”

“No.”

The word came from all three Mercers almost simultaneously.

I felt Emily’s fingers grip the back of my jacket.

Daniel moved toward me.

I raised the phone.

“I’m recording.”

He stopped.

“Good,” I said. “Everybody stay exactly where you are.”

Daniel looked almost amused.

“You think a recording changes what this is?”

“I think it changes how carefully you behave.”

His smile disappeared.

“Give me your phone.”

“No.”

“Claire.”

“No.”

Richard stepped forward.

“Enough.”

Daniel raised a hand.

“Dad.”

For the first time, I saw the hierarchy clearly.

Richard may have built the family.

But Daniel was learning to control it.

He turned back to me.

“Come outside with me.”

“Why?”

“Because I don’t want to discuss my sister’s medical history in front of her.”

Emily laughed.

It was a small, broken sound.

“My medical history?”

Daniel ignored her.

“Claire, please.”

“You signed the transfers.”

His face became completely still.

Richard looked at him.

Victoria whispered, “What did she see?”

There it was.

Confirmation.

Daniel’s eyes never left mine.

“What did Emily show you?”

“Enough.”

“How much?”

“Enough.”

“Claire, listen to me.”

“No. You listen.”

My voice shook, but I kept going.

“Emily is leaving this house tonight.”

“She can’t.”

“Why?”

“She’s under our care.”

“She’s twenty-six.”

“She’s mentally ill.”

“According to a doctor your father knows.”

Richard’s face hardened.

Daniel took another step.

I lifted the phone.

“Stay back.”

He stopped.

“Do you really believe her?”

I looked at Emily.

Then him.

“I believe what I saw.”

“She manipulated you.”

“Did she manipulate your signature onto those wire authorizations?”

His jaw flexed.

“Those transactions were legal.”

“Then you won’t mind explaining them.”

“Not to you.”

“Probably not.”

I heard sirens in the distance.

Very faint.

Daniel heard them, too.

His expression changed.

“You called the police?”

“I called someone I trust.”

Richard swore.

Victoria moved toward the window.

Emily began crying silently behind me.

Daniel stared at me.

“You have no idea what you’ve done.”

“Then explain it.”

He lowered his voice.

“Those companies employ hundreds of people. Dad made aggressive decisions. Some paperwork was structured in ways you might not like. That doesn’t mean Emily’s fantasy is true.”

“Fantasy?”

“She has spent two years trying to destroy this family.”

Emily stepped around me.

“I tried to stop you from stealing.”

Daniel’s eyes snapped toward her.

“Go upstairs.”

“No.”

“Emily.”

“No.”

I watched surprise cross his face.

Maybe it was the first time she had refused him in years.

Richard moved toward her.

I stepped in front of him.

“Don’t touch her.”

The sirens grew louder.

Richard looked at Daniel.

“Handle this.”

Those two words chilled me.

Daniel walked toward the back door.

He unlocked it.

Then looked at me.

“Leave.”

“With Emily.”

“She stays.”

Emily whispered, “I’m going.”

Daniel turned.

“No, you’re not.”

“I am.”

“You don’t have money.”

“I don’t care.”

“You don’t have medication.”

“I don’t need the medication you make me take.”

Victoria gasped.

“Emily!”

“What medication?” I asked.

Emily’s eyes remained on Daniel.

“Sedatives.”

I turned toward him.

“You drug her?”

“Prescribed medication.”

“She doesn’t want it.”

“She becomes unstable without it.”

Emily shook her head.

“It makes me sleep.”

Daniel’s composure finally cracked.

“Because you need sleep!”

“No. You need me quiet.”

The sirens were close now.

Blue light flashed faintly through the trees.

Daniel looked at me.

There was desperation in his eyes.

And something else.

Grief.

“Claire, please.”

For one second, he was the man I knew again.

“Don’t do this.”

I almost hated him for making it hurt.

“You did this.”

Police vehicles entered the driveway.

Richard disappeared toward the study.

I noticed.

So did Emily.

“He’s going for the office.”

“What’s there?”

“Documents.”

I looked at the phone.

Still recording.

“Let him.”

Richard stopped.

He turned.

I held up my second phone.

“Everything I photographed is already in the cloud.”

It was a calculated bluff.

I didn’t know whether everything had uploaded.

But Richard believed me.

His face lost color.

The doorbell rang.

Then pounding.

“Police!”

Daniel closed his eyes.

Victoria began crying.

Not for Emily.

For the family.

Daniel opened the door.

Two officers entered, followed by a third.

“Who called?”

“I did,” I said.

Technically Maya had.

“I’m Claire Bennett. This is Emily Mercer. She says she’s being held here against her will, and she has visible injuries.”

The officers looked at Emily.

One, a woman in her forties, approached slowly.

“Emily, do you want to leave?”

Emily’s lips trembled.

“Yes.”

“Has anyone prevented you from leaving?”

“Yes.”

“Who?”

Emily looked at her family.

Then said, “My father. My brother. And my mother helped them.”

Victoria cried harder.

“That is a lie!”

The officer held up a hand.

“Ma’am.”

Daniel looked at me.

“You’re really doing this.”

I reached into my bag.

I removed the engagement ring.

For a moment, I simply held it.

Then I placed it on the kitchen island.

Daniel stared at it.

“Claire.”

“Our wedding is over.”

His face crumpled.

I had expected anger.

The pain was worse.

“Don’t make a decision like this tonight.”

“I already did.”

“You love me.”

“I did.”

“Did?”

I swallowed.

“I don’t know who I loved.”

He looked as though I had struck him.

Maybe part of me wanted that.

The female officer escorted Emily outside.

I followed.

Daniel called after me.

“Claire!”

I turned once.

He stood beneath the warm kitchen lights, the diamond ring lying between us.

“You’re going to regret trusting her,” he said.

I looked at Emily.

She stood barefoot beside a police cruiser, wrapped in a blanket an officer had given her.

“No,” I said.

“I think I’m going to regret how long I trusted you.”

Then I walked away.

At the hospital, doctors documented Emily’s injuries.

Dehydration.

Malnutrition.

Multiple contusions.

A healing rib fracture.

I sat beside her until nearly four in the morning.

Maya arrived around midnight wearing sweatpants and fury.

She hugged me.

Then said, “Never do that again.”

“Fair.”

Emily fell asleep after the examination.

Maya sat beside me.

“What exactly did you find?”

I told her.

Not everything.

Just enough.

She became very still.

“Claire.”

“I know.”

“If those entities are the ones I think they are…”

“They are.”

“We need counsel.”

“Tomorrow.”

“No. Today.”

She looked toward Emily.

“And you need to assume Daniel knows what you copied.”

My phone vibrated.

Daniel.

I ignored it.

Again.

Again.

Then a voicemail.

I didn’t listen.

At 4:17 a.m., an email arrived from my company account.

The subject line contained no words.

Just a file.

I opened it.

A photograph appeared.

Me.

Entering the Mercer side gate at 10:02 p.m.

Underneath was a single sentence.

You stole confidential material from private property. Come home and we can still fix this.

I stared at the message.

Maya leaned over.

“Who sent that?”

The sender address was unfamiliar.

But I knew the wording.

Come home.

Not come talk.

Not call me.

Come home.

Daniel already thought of me as something that belonged to him.

Then Emily stirred in the hospital bed.

Her eyes opened.

“Claire?”

“I’m here.”

She looked frightened.

“There’s something else.”

“What?”

“I didn’t show you the most important file.”

Maya and I exchanged a glance.

“Where is it?”

Emily swallowed.

“Daniel has it.”

“What’s in it?”

She looked directly at me.

“Your name.”
