Chapter 5

For several seconds, Elena could not speak.

Sophie had never told her that Daniel had visited their apartment.

She knelt beside the sofa.

"Sweetheart, when did you see him?"

Sophie rubbed the bear's ear.

"When Mrs. Alvarez gave me cookies."

Elena's heart pounded.

"Did he talk to you?"

The little girl nodded.

"He said he knew you."

"What else did he say?"

"He asked where Mommy keeps the papers."

Lorenzo exchanged a look with Gabe.

"Did you tell him anything, Sophie?"

She shook her head.

"I said I don't know."

Elena pulled her daughter close.

"Good girl."

Sophie looked frightened.

"Was I bad?"

"No, baby. You did nothing wrong."

Lorenzo crouched beside them.

"Sophie, listen to me. Nobody is angry with you."

She looked at him.

"Not even because of the teddy?"

"Especially not because of the teddy."

The little girl nodded.

Then she reached into her backpack and removed a folded piece of paper.

"The man gave me this."

Elena unfolded it.

There were six words written in black ink.

Tell your mother I want everything.

Lorenzo immediately arranged for Elena and Sophie to remain at the estate while the threat was assessed.

Elena objected.

"I can't just abandon my apartment."

"You don't have to abandon anything," Lorenzo replied. "But Daniel knows where you live."

"He knows where I work, too."

"Yes."

The simplicity of his answer frightened her more than reassurance would have.

Lorenzo continued.

"I can arrange for an independent attorney to help you report the threats and protect the records. You decide what information you share."

Elena looked at Sophie.

"Will she be safe here?"

"I'll take every reasonable precaution."

She studied him.

"That's not a promise."

"No," Lorenzo said. "It's the truth."

For some reason, she trusted that answer more.

The estate changed overnight.

Additional guards were assigned to the entrances.

Visitors required individual authorization.

The security team reviewed employee access logs and inspected the service corridors.

Sophie, meanwhile, was delighted to discover that the guest suite had a bathtub large enough to accommodate three of her stuffed animals.

Elena sat beside the tub while her daughter splashed happily.

For the first time in months, the water was warm enough that she did not have to worry about the heating bill.

After Sophie fell asleep, Elena stepped into the hallway.

Lorenzo stood near the staircase.

"Is she settled?"

Elena nodded.

"She thinks we're on vacation."

"Good."

She looked at him.

"Why are you doing this?"

Lorenzo considered the question.

"Because someone used my house to frighten your daughter."

"That's not the only reason."

He did not deny it.

Elena folded her arms.

"You're hoping the records will tell you something about Enzo."

"Yes."

"Then please don't pretend this is only about helping us."

Lorenzo met her eyes.

"It began with the records."

"And now?"

He glanced toward the guest suite.

"Now there's a little girl upstairs who thinks I gave her the best teddy bear in the world."

Elena's expression softened.

"She does love that bear."

"I noticed."

For a moment, they stood together in silence.

Then Elena whispered, "Thank you for believing her."

Lorenzo looked at her.

"She told the truth."

"Most people don't care about that when the person telling the truth is poor."

He had no answer.

The following morning, Elena and her attorney retrieved the storage locker contents.

Inside was a sealed envelope containing printed billing records, copies of internal hospital correspondence, and a small encrypted storage device.

Elena had preserved the materials for three years.

The attorney arranged for an independent forensic review.

By evening, the preliminary findings revealed a complicated financial scheme involving falsified hospital invoices, shell companies, and unauthorized transfers of confidential information.

Several payments were linked to Daniel Carter.

Others led to a company once controlled by Enzo Moretti's business partner, Victor Salerno.

Lorenzo recognized the name immediately.

Victor had been one of the last people to see Enzo alive.

He had also been one of the men who benefited financially after Enzo's death.

Gabe placed the records on Lorenzo's desk.

"We need to be careful."

Lorenzo stared at the documents.

"Victor told me Enzo was meeting a rival crew that night."

"Maybe he lied."

"Maybe."

Lorenzo looked toward the window.

For five years, he had believed his brother's death was the result of a territorial dispute.

Now he faced the possibility that the explanation had been deliberately constructed to conceal something else.

At 9:17 p.m., the estate's perimeter alarm sounded.

Elena was reading Sophie a bedtime story when the lights flickered.

A distant metallic crash echoed through the hallway.

Sophie sat upright.

"Mommy?"

Elena pulled her close.

"Stay with me."

A security guard appeared at the doorway.

"Mrs. Carter, please come with me."

They were escorted to an interior room with reinforced doors.

Lorenzo was already there.

He crouched beside Sophie.

"Remember Bruno?"

She nodded.

"He's waiting in the kitchen. When everything is safe, you can give him a treat."

Sophie hugged her bear.

"Are bad people here?"

Lorenzo looked at Elena.

Then back at the child.

"Some people are trying to get into the house. My team is making sure they can't."

Elena held her daughter tightly.

Outside, a second alarm sounded.

Gabe's voice came through Lorenzo's radio.

"Boss, we have a vehicle at the south service gate. Two men detained. One of them is carrying a photograph of Elena and Sophie."

Lorenzo's expression hardened.

"Any injuries?"

"None reported."

"Keep everyone away from the family wing. Call the police."

Elena stared at him.

"Daniel?"

"We don't know yet."

Then the radio crackled again.

"Boss, there's something else."

"What?"

"The vehicle was admitted through a temporary access code."

Lorenzo went still.

"Who issued it?"

A pause.

"Margaret Bell."

The police arrived within minutes.

The two men at the gate were taken into custody.

The vehicle contained surveillance photographs, copies of Elena's employment schedule, and a handwritten address.

The address belonged to the storage facility where Elena had kept the records.

Margaret had disappeared.

Her phone was switched off.

Her apartment was empty.

But Gabe found a message she had sent to Victor Salerno earlier that evening.

The woman has the records. Moretti knows about Enzo. You need to leave.

Lorenzo read it twice.

Then he placed the phone on the desk.

For five years, he had hunted enemies outside his gates.

All the while, someone inside his own house had been helping the people who knew what happened to his brother.

And Elena Carter, a woman he had almost dismissed as an insignificant employee, had unknowingly carried the evidence that could expose them.
