Chapter 6

Elena stared at Anna's name on the screen.

Her stomach dropped.

She had learned something during the previous weeks.

When someone you care about has a seriously ill child, every unexpected phone call feels dangerous.

She answered.

“Anna?”

Silence.

Then:

“Can you come?”

Elena's heart began pounding.

“What happened?”

“Please.”

That was enough.

Elena drove to the hospital.

The entire journey, she prepared herself for bad news.

She thought about Milo's tiny hand.

His blue sock.

The crib.

She parked badly and ran through the hospital entrance.

Anna was waiting.

Her eyes were red.

Elena stopped.

Neither spoke.

Then Anna smiled.

“He made it through.”

Elena's knees nearly gave way.

Anna reached her before she fell.

They hugged.

Months of fear seemed to escape both women at once.

The road ahead would still require recovery, monitoring, and patience.

Nobody promised perfection.

But Milo had been given the opportunity everyone had fought for.

Elena entered his room later.

He was sleeping.

She didn't wake him.

She simply sat beside the bed.

For several minutes, Elena watched his chest rise and fall.

Up.

Down.

Up.

Down.

It was the most beautiful rhythm she had ever seen.

She reached into her bag.

The medal was inside.

She had brought it without knowing why.

Elena took it out.

Placed it in her palm.

Then held it beside Milo's tiny hand.

The medal suddenly looked enormous.

Anna stood behind her.

“You kept it.”

“They wouldn't take it.”

“I know.”

Elena smiled.

Anna asked:

“Does it feel different now?”

Elena looked at the silver disk.

“Yes.”

“How?”

She thought for a moment.

“When I won it, I thought it represented everything I'd survived.”

“And now?”

Elena looked at Milo.

“Now it reminds me what people will do for someone they've never met.”

Anna placed a hand on Elena's shoulder.

Months later, Elena returned to training.

The world expected her story to end with the auction.

It didn't.

There were more competitions.

More bad mornings.

More painful practices.

More throws that landed short.

But something inside Elena had changed.

She no longer measured her life exclusively in meters and medals.

One afternoon, Tomas found her staring at the medal before practice.

“Having second thoughts?”

“About selling it?”

“Yes.”

Elena smiled.

“No.”

“Even knowing you got it back?”

“Especially because I got it back.”

Tomas didn't understand.

Elena picked up her javelin.

“I used to think winning that medal was the best thing that ever happened to me.”

“And now?”

She looked toward the field.

“Now I think winning it was just how the story started.”

She walked toward the runway.

Tomas watched her go.

Then smiled.

Because he finally understood.
