Adrian Cole had spent nine years trusting Miles Carter with his life.
That trust ended on Christmas morning.
At 8:15 a.m., Adrian sat across from an independent forensic accountant named Thomas Reed.
Thomas had previously reviewed several of Adrian's legitimate businesses.
He was not a friend.
That was precisely why Adrian had called him.
"I want every transaction connected to the Cole Family Foundation reviewed," Adrian said.
Thomas opened his laptop.
"How far back?"
"Two years."
"And who has access to the records?"
"Claire. Miles. The accounting department."
Thomas looked up.
"Does your wife know you're requesting this review?"
"She's the reason I'm requesting it."
Adrian hesitated.
"Someone may have used her authorization without permission."
Thomas studied him.
"Then we need to preserve the original records before anyone changes them."
Adrian nodded.
For the first time in years, he had no desire to hear reassuring answers.
He wanted the truth.
Even if it destroyed him.
By noon, Thomas had identified several suspicious transfers.
By two, he found evidence that Claire's electronic signature had been used from an internal device while she was attending a prenatal appointment.
By four, he discovered that the device had been assigned to Miles Carter's office.
Adrian stared at the report.
"How much?"
Thomas turned the screen toward him.
"At least eighteen million dollars in questionable transfers. The full amount may be higher."
Adrian felt his chest tighten.
"Where did it go?"
"Several intermediary companies. Some appear connected to Warren Pike."
Adrian stood.
For a moment, he could hear nothing except the faint hum of the office heating system.
Miles.
His closest lieutenant.
The man who had stood beside him at his wedding.
The man who had arranged security for Claire's medical appointments.
The man who had promised to protect his daughter.
Adrian turned toward the window.
"How long?"
"Some transactions began more than a year ago."
"And Claire knew?"
"She appears to have been investigating them for several months."
Adrian closed his eyes.
His wife had discovered a conspiracy inside his empire.
She had been pregnant.
Alone.
And afraid.
While he had been spending his nights with another woman.
Miles did not answer Adrian's calls.
His office was empty.
His personal security detail had disappeared.
And two vehicles assigned to his department were missing from the garage.
Adrian's new security supervisor entered the study.
"Mr. Cole, we've confirmed that Carter left the property before dawn."
"Where?"
"We don't know."
Adrian looked at him.
"Find out whether Claire's attorney has been contacted."
The supervisor hesitated.
"There's something else."
He placed a printed photograph on the desk.
It showed a black sedan leaving the service entrance on Christmas Eve.
Adrian recognized the vehicle immediately.
"That's the car Claire used."
"Yes, sir."
"What about it?"
"The driver reported that another vehicle followed them for approximately twenty minutes before turning away."
Adrian stared at the photograph.
"Whose vehicle?"
"We're checking."
Adrian picked up his phone.
He called Rebecca Shaw.
She answered on the third ring.
"Mr. Cole."
"Claire may be in danger."
There was a pause.
"Explain."
"Miles Carter has been stealing from my companies. He's working with Warren Pike. He may know Claire has evidence."
Rebecca's voice remained controlled.
"Claire has already received threatening messages."
Adrian gripped the phone.
"What messages?"
Rebecca repeated the words.
Your husband can't protect you from what you started.
Adrian felt a cold pressure spread through his chest.
"Let me speak to her."
"She does not want direct contact."
"Rebecca, this isn't about our marriage anymore."
"I understand."
"Then tell me she's safe."
"She is currently safe."
Adrian closed his eyes.
"Please."
The word surprised him.
He could not remember the last time he had used it without expecting something in return.
"Tell her I know about Miles."
Rebecca was silent for a moment.
"I'll tell her."
Claire listened as Rebecca explained what Adrian had discovered.
She was sitting in the medical residence's small dining room with a cup of tea.
Outside, snow covered the garden.
"So he finally believes me," Claire said.
"He's confirmed several of the transactions."
Claire looked down.
"Did he ask about the baby?"
"Yes."
"What did you tell him?"
"That you're receiving appropriate care."
Claire nodded.
Rebecca hesitated.
"He also asked whether you'd speak with him."
"No."
"All right."
Claire stirred her tea.
Then she looked up.
"Rebecca, I don't want him hurt."
"I understand."
"I know what he's done. I know what kind of business he's been involved in. But I don't want Miles or Warren to kill him."
Rebecca leaned forward.
"Your concern for Adrian doesn't require you to return to him."
"I know."
"And you don't have to decide anything about your marriage today."
Claire placed a hand on her stomach.
"Good. Because right now, I only want to keep her safe."
That evening, Brooke arrived at Adrian's mansion.
The house was nearly empty.
The Christmas decorations remained in place, but the ballroom had been cleared.
The enormous tree still glowed beside the windows.
Brooke found Adrian in his study.
He looked as though he had not slept.
"I've been calling you," she said.
"I've been busy."
She glanced at the documents spread across his desk.
"What's happening?"
Adrian looked at her engagement ring.
"Where did you get the idea that Claire and I were finished?"
Brooke frowned.
"You told me."
"What exactly did I tell you?"
"That you barely spoke. That she didn't care about your marriage anymore."
Adrian looked away.
Brooke stepped closer.
"Was that true?"
He said nothing.
"Adrian."
"No."
The answer seemed to strike her physically.
Brooke stared at him.
"You told me she knew about us."
Adrian closed his eyes.
"I told you she understood the situation."
"That's not the same thing."
"No."
Brooke looked down at the ring.
For months, she had believed Adrian's marriage existed only on paper.
She had wanted to believe Claire had accepted their arrangement.
The photograph from Christmas Eve had destroyed that illusion.
"She was standing there," Brooke whispered.
Adrian said nothing.
"She was standing there, pregnant, while you proposed to me."
"I know."
"And you didn't even look at her."
Adrian lowered his head.
Brooke removed the ring.
She placed it on his desk.
"I thought you were choosing me because you loved me."
"Brooke—"
"But you were using me to avoid dealing with your marriage."
Adrian did not deny it.
She stepped back.
"I won't marry you."
Then she walked out.
Adrian stared at the diamond.
A week earlier, he would have considered losing Brooke a disaster.
Now he could barely feel it.
All he could see was Claire standing beneath the Christmas archway.
Her hand resting on their daughter.
Her face completely still.
At 11:36 p.m., Rebecca received an urgent call from a federal investigator.
A preliminary review of Claire's documents had revealed evidence suggesting that Miles and Warren were preparing to seize control of several Cole businesses.
The investigators wanted to speak with Claire.
Rebecca agreed to arrange a formal interview.
Then she called Adrian.
"Mr. Cole, I need to ask you something."
"What?"
"Did Miles Carter have access to your wife's medical schedule?"
Adrian stood.
"Yes."
"Did he know where she planned to give birth?"
"Yes."
Rebecca paused.
"We have reason to believe he may have been monitoring her appointments."
Adrian's blood ran cold.
"Why?"
"We don't know yet."
Adrian looked toward the nursery doorway.
The white crib stood in the darkness.
His daughter's arrival was supposed to be the happiest moment of his life.
Instead, the people closest to him had turned her mother into a target.
"Rebecca," he said quietly, "whatever Claire needs, I'll provide it."
"She needs you to respect her decision to stay away."
Adrian swallowed.
"Then that's what I'll do."
Two days later, Claire received a letter.
It had been delivered to Rebecca's office by courier.
The envelope contained no return address.
Inside was a single photograph.
Claire leaving the medical residence.
The photograph had been taken that morning.
On the back, someone had written:
You can't hide forever.
Claire stared at the image.
Then she looked toward the window.
Across the street, a dark SUV was parked beside the curb.
Its engine was running.
