Chapter 5

Claire did not scream when she saw the SUV.

She closed the curtains.

Then she called Rebecca.

"Someone photographed me outside the residence."

Rebecca's voice became serious.

"Are you inside now?"

"Yes."

"Stay there. I'm contacting the authorities and the residence's security team."

Claire looked toward the door.

Her daughter moved beneath her hand.

She had spent five years living inside a guarded mansion.

She had once believed security meant safety.

Now she understood that the people controlling the gates could be the greatest danger of all.

Within an hour, local police had documented the photograph and reviewed the residence's exterior cameras.

The SUV had already left.

Investigators could not immediately identify the occupants.

Rebecca arranged for Claire to move to another secure location.

This time, Claire would not travel alone.

Before leaving, she asked to speak with the federal investigator assigned to the financial case.

His name was Daniel Foster.

He arrived with a female colleague and met Claire in a private room.

Rebecca remained beside her.

"Mrs. Cole," Foster began, "we understand you've preserved financial records connected to several companies."

Claire nodded.

"I have."

"Why did you begin collecting them?"

"Because someone used my authorization to move money I never approved."

"Who do you believe was responsible?"

"Miles Carter."

"And your husband?"

Claire took a slow breath.

"Adrian authorized other transactions. I don't know everything he knew about Miles's activities."

Foster nodded.

"We'll need you to distinguish what you personally observed from what you suspect."

"I can do that."

Claire opened the folder Rebecca had brought.

For the next two hours, she explained the documents.

The dates.

The authorization records.

The transfers.

The ownership changes.

The payments connected to Warren Pike.

She did not exaggerate.

She did not attempt to protect Adrian.

And she did not claim to know things she could not prove.

When the interview ended, Foster closed his notebook.

"Mrs. Cole, you've provided important information."

Claire looked at him.

"Will this stop Miles?"

"We're investigating the threats as well as the financial activity. I can't promise an immediate outcome."

Claire nodded.

She had learned to distrust promises.

But she was beginning to trust actions.

Adrian learned about the photograph that afternoon.

He was meeting with Thomas Reed when Rebecca called.

"Claire has received another threat."

Adrian stood immediately.

"Where is she?"

"Her location is being changed."

"Let me send security."

"No."

"Rebecca—"

"Claire does not want anyone associated with your organization near her."

Adrian looked down.

For years, he had believed his name could open every door.

Now it was the reason the most important door in his life remained closed.

"What can I do?"

"Cooperate with the investigators. Preserve your records. Do not interfere with Claire's decisions."

Adrian was silent.

Then he said, "All right."

After the call, Thomas watched him carefully.

"You're going to have to make some difficult decisions."

Adrian looked at the financial reports.

"I know."

"Some of these records may expose your own conduct."

"I know."

Thomas closed the folder.

"Then you need independent criminal defense counsel. And you need to stop treating your businesses as if they're separate from the people affected by them."

Adrian looked toward the window.

He had spent years building an empire that made people afraid to say no.

Now his wife had said no.

And he was finally beginning to understand what that meant.

Three days later, Adrian voluntarily met with federal investigators through his attorney.

He provided access to financial records and information concerning Miles's activities.

He also acknowledged his own involvement in unlawful business practices.

His attorney warned him that cooperation did not erase his responsibility.

Adrian understood.

For the first time, he was not asking someone else to carry the consequences of his decisions.

Meanwhile, investigators identified a warehouse outside Philadelphia connected to Warren Pike.

The warehouse had been used to store records and equipment associated with the financial operation.

Miles had visited the property twice after Christmas.

When investigators searched it under a warrant, they recovered electronic devices, corporate documents, and communications linking Miles to the diverted funds.

They also found photographs of Claire.

Her prenatal appointments.

Her vehicle.

The entrance to Rebecca's office.

And the medical residence.

Adrian learned about the discovery during a meeting with his attorney.

He sat motionless.

"How long had he been watching her?"

"We don't have a complete timeline."

Adrian stared at the table.

Miles had stood beside him for nine years.

He had called Claire family.

He had promised to protect her.

And Adrian had given him unrestricted access to her life.

Claire was thirty-one weeks pregnant when she began experiencing persistent abdominal discomfort.

At first, she assumed it was stress.

Then the pain returned.

Margaret, the nurse assigned to assist her, recommended immediate medical evaluation.

Claire was taken to a nearby hospital.

Rebecca met her there.

The obstetrician examined her and arranged monitoring.

After reviewing the results, the doctor explained that Claire was experiencing contractions and needed observation.

"We're going to take this seriously," the doctor said. "Our goal is to keep you and your baby safe."

Claire nodded.

"Is she okay?"

"Her current monitoring is reassuring. We'll continue watching both of you closely."

Claire closed her eyes.

For the first time since Christmas Eve, she wanted Adrian.

Not because she had forgiven him.

Not because she wanted to return.

But because he was their daughter's father.

And she was frightened.

She looked at Rebecca.

"Can you tell him I'm in the hospital?"

"Of course."

"But don't tell him where."

Rebecca nodded.

Adrian received the call while meeting with his attorney.

"Claire is in the hospital," Rebecca said.

He stood so quickly that his chair struck the wall.

"What happened?"

"She's experiencing contractions. The medical team is monitoring her."

"The baby?"

"Her condition is currently stable."

Adrian pressed a hand against his forehead.

"Can I see her?"

"She hasn't requested a visit."

"Please tell her I'm here if she needs me."

"I will."

Adrian sat down slowly.

His attorney watched him.

"Is everything all right?"

Adrian shook his head.

"My daughter might be born early."

He looked at the documents spread across the table.

For years, he had believed power meant controlling what happened next.

But he could not control Claire's pregnancy.

He could not force her to forgive him.

He could not undo Christmas Eve.

And he could not purchase the right to stand beside her hospital bed.

All he could do was wait.

That evening, Claire's contractions eased.

The doctor explained that she would need continued monitoring and follow-up care.

Claire was exhausted.

Rebecca sat beside her bed.

"Adrian knows you're here."

Claire looked toward the window.

"What did he say?"

"He asked whether you and the baby were safe."

Claire closed her eyes.

"Did he ask to come?"

"Yes."

A long silence followed.

Then Claire whispered, "I don't know if I can see him."

"You don't have to decide tonight."

Claire placed her hand over her stomach.

"I still love him, Rebecca."

Rebecca said nothing.

"But I don't trust him."

"Those feelings can exist at the same time."

Claire turned her face toward the pillow.

"I don't want my daughter to grow up without her father."

"Then you can decide what kind of relationship is safe for her. That doesn't require you to return to your marriage."

Claire nodded slowly.

Outside, snow began falling against the hospital windows.

She thought about the man she had married.

The man who had betrayed her.

And the father who might still have a chance to become someone their daughter could know without fear.

But before Claire could decide what came next, Rebecca's phone rang.

It was Daniel Foster.

Miles Carter had been arrested.

And he was asking to speak with Adrian.
